Block of the Week: Crystals

Marmalademellow

Salutations to you, and salutations to all! Welcome to this week's block of the week! Today we will be covering crystals. This dazzling block is very unique from where it's located to what can be crafted with it. Let's dive right in!

Location

This beautiful block has not one, not two, but seven variants, each with its own respective block and shard. In and of itself, you don’t need to spend millions of years seeking them out, in fact, while mining you probably have come across them a few times. Crystals can be found in both stone-level caves and the depths, so typically if you’re mining you won’t have much trouble finding them, as they are a rather bright type of block. With a normal pickaxe the pointy crystals will only drop crystal shards but these shards on the crystals can also be silk touched if you'd like to use them for building.

There are certain locations where crystals generate. According to our research, the generation is as follows:

Basin (Stone Caves): White and Blue Crystals

Depths (Deepslate Caves) and Dripstone Caves: Red, Orange, Yellow and White Crystals.

Lush Caves: Green and Purple Crystals

Ice Caves: Blue and White Crystals

Crafting

Aside from just being cool blocks, they do have some cool crafting recipes including (In Order of Images):

A) Normal Crystal Blocks (Involves Crystal Shards)

B) Crystal Bricks (Involves Crystal Blocks)

C)  Chiseled Crystals (Involves Crystal Blocks)

D)  Crystal Lanterns (Involves Crystal Shards; does not give off light; orientation based similar to logs)

E)  Prism Lanterns (Involves Crystal Lanterns; does not give off light)

Regarding Chiseled Crystals, Crystal Bricks, and Crystal Lanterns, they all have different textures and colors depending on what type of shard or crystal block you use in the crafting process; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and white. Using orange crystal blocks when crafting crystal bricks makes orange crystal bricks, and green crystal shards with iron nuggets make a green crystal lantern, etc, I’m sure you catch my drift.

Out of the craftable recipes with crystals, the prism lantern is definitely the coolest (at least in my opinion). Using 1 of each color variant crystal lantern, and some iron nuggets, you can craft the prism lantern, which is basically a RGB color changing block, with 2 settings you can choose between by right-clicking the block.

While the craftable recipes do exist and are cool things to do crystals. Starting on patch 0.6.0, with the nether's re-opening came a long-awaited event, as well as new blocks, one of which is the transit block.

Transit blocks are powered with crystal shards, and allow you to teleport to other transit blocks with the same crystal code. In transit blocks, there is a 3x3 area, and depending on what order you put crystals in there, that’s the code you need to use for the other transit block to function, allowing you to teleport anywhere in your realm at the drop of a hat using this block. When placed, it can store 100 energy, with one energy being subtracted with every teleport. Although you will need to replenish the crystal shards and crystals blocks in this block after using all 100 energy, there’s no doubt that this is an interesting block.

Now let's showcase some awesome creations where people use crystals in awesome ways! We are going to end after here so this is Marm signing off:

Crystals used in the Caves of Origin Isles.
From my realm (MarmaladeMellow) as pillars and a chandelier.
Disco floor from ClifPlays' realm with alternating version of prism blocks.
ClifPlays' realm again with crystal shards as traffic light signals.
Finally we have an image of the youtuber TheVisionaryOne's fountain. (the yellow striped blocks are gold bricks)

Mob Spotlight: The Gullet

Yon

Hi there! Yon here, today we are going to cover a rather interesting mob in Origin Realms, the Gullet!

Background

You may remember the Gullet as “The Great Hunger” or “mob c” in first mob vote in the 2019 Minecon Live. Mojang intended this little bodied creature with their big head to burrow into the ground and come out to chomp you, an unsuspecting victim, down. It was also intended to have a mechanic to unenchant items, but since the phantom won the mob vote, mob c  never returned. Mojang later added the grindstone block that unenchants items like mob c was intended to. Regardless of this, Origin Realms got creative and decided to add mob c themselves to the server with the new name, the Gullet. Let me tell you, the way they've added it and its new mechanics are amazing!

Spawning and Game Mechanics

First of all, let's cover where the Gullet spawns so you can encounter this amazing mob for yourselves. The Gullet can spawn in any cave biome in the basin or depths, so keep your eyes peeled, because the Gullet is not the friendliest. Upon encountering, they will immediately attempt to start chomping you on site.

There are 3 main mechanics in the Gullet’s behavior:

The first main mechanic of the Gullet is its digging. When the gullet attacks you, you might want to swing back. However, when you try to fight back, the Gullet may dig into the ground to evade. While they are in this state, you will hear digging sounds around you until eventually the Gullet pops out of the ground ready for another battle.

The second mechanic actually depends on your surroundings. If  there are ores nearby, the Gullet is going to prioritize those first. They will chomp down on any ores they can set their sights on. If there aren't any ores near you, you’re going be the gullet's next meal, so be cautious!

Now, on to the third and final mechanic. You may be asking yourself, “why should I let the gullet eat my ores if it's just going to dig down and get away?” Well, I'm glad to say that if you hit the Gullet, it will drop all of the ores he’s eaten so far with enough hits. The ores that drop from the Gullet's mouth have a fortune IV effect which you cant normally obtain in Minecraft, or in Origin Realms either, making it useful for getting more of those hard to find ores such as diamonds or platinum with less ore in bigger quantities. From what I've seen, you can even make a farm with this 🤔.

Tips and Tricks

Speaking of farms, how do you contain a mob that digs down on almost every single block? Well the Gullet's digging has rules; The Gullet is unable to dig into any non-full blocks or obsidian. There are also non-lethal ways to make the Gullet spew out the ores, while also keeping this dangerous yet useful mob alive. Snowballs will not damage the gullet but knock it back a bit to drop ores eaten, so take advantage of those lava lakes in the depths (or use some frost cores in the nether if you want to) and the new ice caves to get snowballs and obsidian for a desirable farm size.

Buggy Fun

There is one major unintended spawn place for the Gullet and its the nether. He wasn't supposed to spawn there but for the time being he is in there too. You can can use some quarts or some nether gold ores to distract him and strike him down when you get the chance!

So long, and see you in the next article! Yon out. (And then he was never seen again)

Realm Review: TheORMuseum

Marmalademellow

Special thanks to our (not so) new photographer Sporent on these pictures and for articles to come!!!

Welcome to the second ever Realm Review on OR News! To kick it back off now that we’re back up and running, we’re going to start off with a realm you may or may not have heard of: TheORMuseum. This realm is great info-wise for if you’re new, or a returning OG, but even if you already are well acquainted with OR. I still believe it’s worth a look.

What exactly can you find here?

Here at TheORMuseum’s realm, an account run by a currently anonymous individual who goes by TheORProjects, has their realm boasts a large amount of info pertaining to the game that newbies often trip up over, such as tasks, graves, and so much more. Some of the exhibits that are currently there include:

1. Event exhibits (ex. Valentines, Spring, etc.)

2. Farming and custom block exhibits

3. A complete collection of the custom tools

4. Info boards regarding misc stuff

5. A Zoo containing the various OR exclusive mobs

Build Organization

Currently, the realm appears to consist of 3 main sectors, with the main sector being a beautiful modernized neoclassical style looking building, a courtyard in the front of the main sector which you spawn in, and an expansive zoo in the back as the 3rd sector. The main building consists of 3 floors, each with their respective qualities, with the zoo being particularly unique in ways I will go over later in the article. With these next couple sections regarding the content in these sections, I’ll try to be brief, as you should go check it out for yourself.

Inside the Museum Itself

You waltz into the building, and are immediately greeted by a globe in the center of some misc information, but to your left there's an expansive guide to enchanting and all the custom enchants entailed in the Origin Realms experience, looking to the right of the globe, a hallway beckons, containing what appears to be one of every possible custom mob on OR, even going down to the specifics of color/variant, this isn’t the zoo sector, more on that later as I said.

Moving past that, if you look around, you’ll notice that each aspect of the museum get’s its own special build or room style for it which is a nice added touch, no two rooms look alike. Each event also gets its own special room, with 1+ of each furniture available from the event for you to admire. Not biased at all definitely, but my favorite of the event rooms is the spring one.

Contained within the circle made by the winding staircase, a statue of sketchi stands tall, watching over a collection of paintings, with the area behind that containing a complete event tool and key set. Although that in itself is impressive, that’s not all that’s in this stunning build.

Heading up the stairs there are 2 more floors just waiting to be explored, full of info regarding custom blocks, farming schematics, and even a cafe!

Honestly, I could explore this realm’s museum countless times and it would never get old. The build style is phenomenal, and gives its own personal touches to each and every aspect of the museum. Moving forward from that, as you walk out the back, which is located at the tool display, you’ll notice a rather cool structure, or should I say structures in the distance.

More than just a Zoo

Walking out the back, you’d surely notice the bold lettering saying “Zoo,” but what lies behind it shocked me personally, rather than just having animals in fences just there like I’ve seen in many realms, these mobs featured have their own unique moderately large habitats. Some of the habitats that reside here include: A savannah, a tundra, and many more! As I’ve been saying throughout this, I do highly recommend you check this realm out.

Conclusion

To wrap this up, I’m technically supposed to give a numerical rating, but honestly I don’t believe a numerical rating would do this realm justice, so I’m just going to end it here by once again stating the obvious: this realm is awesome. To any newbies out there, if you’re feeling lost, a stop by this museum would definitely be worth your while! Until next time, this is Marm signing off.

Hey Artiro here, thanks for fully reading this Volume! Some keen eye readers probably caught on the fact that a left out some of the more recent articles and the dungeons article, this was done deliberately was I didn't think it was worth it to include another BOTW and Mob spotlight and for the dungeon article was not included because dungeons is cancelled (as we knew them).
OR News will be going on another hiatus due to the fact I have exams quite soon, wish me luck!
