Mob Spotlight: The Gullet

Hi there! Yon here, today we are going to cover a rather interesting mob in Origin Realms, the Gullet!

Background

You may remember the Gullet as “The Great Hunger” or “mob c” in first mob vote in the 2019 Minecon Live. Mojang intended this little bodied creature with their big head to burrow into the ground and come out to chomp you, an unsuspecting victim, down. It was also intended to have a mechanic to unenchant items, but since the phantom won the mob vote, mob c  never returned. Mojang later added the grindstone block that unenchants items like mob c was intended to. Regardless of this, Origin Realms got creative and decided to add mob c themselves to the server with the new name, the Gullet. Let me tell you, the way they've added it and its new mechanics are amazing!

Spawning and Game Mechanics

First of all, let's cover where the Gullet spawns so you can encounter this amazing mob for yourselves. The Gullet can spawn in any cave biome in the basin or depths, so keep your eyes peeled, because the Gullet is not the friendliest. Upon encountering, they will immediately attempt to start chomping you on site.

There are 3 main mechanics in the Gullet’s behavior:

The first main mechanic of the Gullet is its digging. When the gullet attacks you, you might want to swing back. However, when you try to fight back, the Gullet may dig into the ground to evade. While they are in this state, you will hear digging sounds around you until eventually the Gullet pops out of the ground ready for another battle.

The second mechanic actually depends on your surroundings. If  there are ores nearby, the Gullet is going to prioritize those first. They will chomp down on any ores they can set their sights on. If there aren't any ores near you, you’re going be the gullet's next meal, so be cautious!

Now, on to the third and final mechanic. You may be asking yourself, “why should I let the gullet eat my ores if it's just going to dig down and get away?” Well, I'm glad to say that if you hit the Gullet, it will drop all of the ores he’s eaten so far with enough hits. The ores that drop from the Gullet's mouth have a fortune IV effect which you cant normally obtain in Minecraft, or in Origin Realms either, making it useful for getting more of those hard to find ores such as diamonds or platinum with less ore in bigger quantities. From what I've seen, you can even make a farm with this 🤔.

Tips and Tricks

Speaking of farms, how do you contain a mob that digs down on almost every single block? Well the Gullet's digging has rules; The Gullet is unable to dig into any non-full blocks or obsidian. There are also non-lethal ways to make the Gullet spew out the ores, while also keeping this dangerous yet useful mob alive. Snowballs will not damage the gullet but knock it back a bit to drop ores eaten, so take advantage of those lava lakes in the depths (or use some frost cores in the nether if you want to) and the new ice caves to get snowballs and obsidian for a desirable farm size.

Buggy Fun

There is one major unintended spawn place for the Gullet and its the nether. He wasn't supposed to spawn there but for the time being he is in there too. You can can use some quarts or some nether gold ores to distract him and strike him down when you get the chance!
